The Guidance on Load Securing has recently been updated by the DVSA (Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency, formally VOSA). This guide details useful information for hauliers and operators on how the DVSA and other regulators expect loads to be secured during transit.
We’ve highlighted the key points from this update and the information you need to ensure you’re adhering to the DVSA regulations.
Curtain Side Vehicles - Any items or pallets under 400kg can be secured with Curtain Side Load/Cargo Straps. Anything over 400kg must be secured with load-rated nets or with Ratchet Straps to the bed of the trailer/vehicle. With either method, it’s imperative that it is able to restrain half the weight of the load to the rear and side, and the full weight forward.
Box Vehicles & Rigids - When it comes to load securing, vehicles with rigid sides are no different to any other vehicle so load requirements still apply. Box vans and rigid-side vehicles do offer some load security, but it’s important to consider the impact of a load shift on vehicle stability. The DVSA recommend using one or a combination of the following
Vehicle Transport & Recovery - Unless the loading scheme says otherwise, any vehicles carried on car transporters should face forward. The weight of the vehicle should be distributed evenly across the width of the vehicle so that the driver has enough space to work safely on each side and the centre of gravity should be over the lengthwise centre line of the vehicle transporter.
The load dictates the number of chocks and lashings used, as a general guide, there should be three contact points between the transporter and the vehicle. Follow the guide below along with our recommended product buys.
- Vehicle on a flat deck - 2 wheels secured by lashings that are preferably diagonally opposite, plus one chock or lashing on the third wheel of each vehicle.
- Vehicle on an angled deck - 3 wheels secured 2 with lashings and one with chocks, or 3 with lashings.
Car Transporter Wheel Straps - Claw Hook and Steel Eye Diverter Strap.
- First and last vehicles on decks - 4 wheels secured by lashings on vehicles loaded at the front and rear.
