How to attach a vehicle recovery strap

How to attach a vehicle recovery strap

If you need to pull a vehicle out safely, you need to ensure that you’re using the right equipment. Injuries can occur if the vehicle is not secured properly when trying to recover it, especially if your vehicle recovery straps break.

In terms of specifications, vehicle recovery straps are available in lengths that span 20-40 feet and widths of 2-6 inches. Generally speaking, each inch of width can pull about 10,000 pounds.

How to use vehicle recovery straps

To attach the vehicle recovery strap, first of all, locate where the tow hook on the vehicle is. Once you have found it, hook the recovery strap to it and thread the end of the recovery strap through the vehicle’s tow hook. Take hold of the other end of the strap and feed it through the loop that you have threaded through, pulling the end tight.

Remember! Never attach the recovery strap to something other than a tow hook. If you attach it to the bumper, axle or steering rods it could cause damage to the vehicle.

Once the vehicle recovery strap is attached to the vehicle, connect the other end of it to the vehicle pulling it out.

Using the D-ring, attach the semi-circle section around the tow hook of the recovery vehicle. Loop the other end of the recovery strap through the D-ring and secure with the pin.

Now the straps are attached, the recovery vehicle can start slowly pulling the stranded vehicle out to safety.

Key points for using vehicle recovery straps

  • Make sure the tow hooks are free from rust and are securely attached to the vehicle.
  • Check that the recovery straps themselves are in good condition and that there are no tears, loose threads of frays.
  • When attaching the straps, make sure they are not rubbing against anything sharp on the vehicle that could damage them.
  • Never attach a recovery strap with a knot! Always follow the instructions.
  • Before starting to pull the vehicle, remove any obstacles from the pathway.
  • For extra safety, place a blanket or tarp over the strap when starting to pull. If the strap does snap it will slow it down and hopefully, avoid injuries occurring.
  • When you’re not using the straps, store them away from direct sunlight and moisture to ensure they stay in top condition.
